6 places to go whale watching in Australia
There's nothing quite as spectacular as seeing a whale in real life. Home to more than 45 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises, Australia is undeniably one of the best destinations for whale watching in the world.
Here are some of the best places to witness these amazing creatures down under.
1. Hervey Bay, QLD
Humpback whales arrive in Hervey Bay from mid-July and remain there until late November. Fraser Island provides sheltered waters for these whales to rest.
2. Port Stephens, NSW
Port Stephens provides a spectacular vantage point to witness bottlenose dolphins and admire humpback whales on their annual northern migration between June and August.
3. Warrnambool, VIC
The free viewing platform off Logans Beach Road provides a great place from which to watch southern right whales, which generally start arriving in June and stay until September. Rare blue whales can also be seen off shore during May.
4. Great Australian Bight Marine Park, SA
Travel to the Head of Bight region and you’ll be provided with an excellent cliff-top viewing region for southern right whales, which nurse there between May and October. This spectacular region is also home to sea lions, and great white sharks!
5. Albany, WA
Humpback whales travelling north-west to Broome can be seen in Albany between June and November and southern right whales take shelter in Albany’s southern bays.
6. Whitsundays, QLD
Every year humpback whales head to the Whitsundays Islands from May to September, where the shallow, sheltered and warm waters provide the ideal calving ground.
