1. Diapur, Victoria
While it might sound phonetically like something a baby might wear, Diapur is actually a small neighbourhood that’s found in Victoria’s Wimmera region.
2. Gingin, Western Australia
While your first thought may be of a delicious cocktail, Gingin is actually a town north of Perth, which name means many streams in local indigenous dialect.
3. Nowhere Else, Tasmania
Aptly named, this region near Devonport in north-western Tasmania truly is unique. Another place called Nowhere Else can be found in South Australia too!
4. Useless Inlet, Western Australia
Named by French explorers Nicolas Thomas Baudin and Louis-Claude Desaules De Freycinet, Useless Inlet reveals their opinion of the sandbank blocking the entry.
5. Foul Bay, South Australia
When Matthew Flinders sailed around the continent, he didn’t think much of this bay on the Yorke Peninsula that he couldn’t anchor at. And the name stuck!
6. Disappointment Hill, Western Australia
When intrepid reported Fran Hann climbed this hill in 1903 and found no water she was her chief emotion ended up becoming the hill’s namesake.
7. Woop Woop, Western Australia
This very remote former mill town southeast of Perth came into existence in 1925 and now colloquially is an expression to mean the “middle of nowhere”.
8. Come by Chance, New South Wales
With a tiny population of 187 people, Come by Chance was first founded when a group of pastoralists stumbled on this land right back in 1817.
9. Manangatang, Victoria
A small, country town on the Mallee Highway, Manangatang is a combination of indigenous words “manang” meaning land and “kaaiti” meaning water.
10. Bubble Bubble, Northern Territory
The place that’s so nice they named it twice, Bubble Bubble is an outstation on the banks of a river in Keep River National Park in the Northern Territory.
