Brisbane is an incredible destination to spend a weekend, week or maybe even longer. But after flights and accommodation expenses can start to add up a bit.

1. Have a laugh at Brisbane Powerhouse

Every Friday the Brisbane Powerhouse plays host to Knockoff, a fun night of free comedy featuring the best location talent and a range of quality interstate acts.

2. Explore the fascinating City Hall 

The labyrinthine 1920s civic edifice of the recently refurbished City Hall is best explored via the free guided tour, but register early as groups fill up quickly.

3. Wander around Kangaroo Point

This is one of the best vantage points to observe the city of Brisbane, particularly as twilights as the lights of the skyscrapers reflect across Brisbane River.

4. View the sunset at Brisbane Lookout

Another contender for the best vantage point in the city, Brisbane Lookout is just 15 minutes out of the city and features incredible, spacious views of the city below.

5. Brisbane university art shows

The Queensland University of Technology’s Art Museum, the Queensland College of Art and University of Queensland all have impressive collections to see free!

6. Explore the Cultural Precinct

While you need tickets for the galleries and concerts, there’s generally plenty of free exhibitions, screenings and performances if you keep your ear to the ground.

7. Wander around Sherwood Arboretum

Often missed by tourists (and locals too for that matter) Sherwood Arboretum is often deserted and one of the prettiest spots in the city to wander around.

8. Explore Davies Park Markets

Sometimes referred to as the West End Markets, every Saturday Davies Park plays home to peddlers and pushers of all sorts of fascinating items to discover.

9. Take advantage of the CityHopper ferry

Definitely the best (and cheapest) way to travel on the Brisbane River, the CityHopper Ferry runs a free service that departs on the half hours seven days a week.

10. Enjoy the New Farm Riverwalk

Recently reopened to the public after being destroyed in the 2011 floods, the New Farm Riverwalk is a unique city that zigzags its way through spectacular scenery.
