6 tricks to help you save for your next cruise

Cruise holidays don’t have to be a pipedream that you can’t afford. Here are a few tips and tricks that will have you cashed up and ready to cruise in no time.

1. Start with one dollar

A dollar doesn’t sound like much, but it’s all you need to get started on saving. Set yourself a 52 week challenge. For the first week you put one dollar into savings, then every week after you increase the amount by one dollar. At the end you’ll have almost $1,400 saved – and you probably won’t even notice it.

2. Take the five dollar challenge

It’s as simple as it sounds – every time you get a five dollar note, save it. This is another tactic that encourages you to save money without realising it. Whenever you get a fiver, take it out of your wallet and put it into a box. You will be amazed at how quickly your holiday fund builds up.

3. Start a dedicated travel fund

It can be hard to save if all your money is sitting in the one account. Open a dedicated savings account so that you can accurately track your money and aren’t tempted to spend it on something else. Look out for accounts with special bonus interest rates to help your fund grow faster.

4. Buy a reusable water bottle

This one is good for your wallet and for the environment. Even at just $1 each, drinking a couple of waters a day will cost you almost $1,000 over the year. Buy a solid refillable bottle and commit to no disposable water bottles for a full year. And if you think you can give up your morning latte (or switch it for a homemade one), then you’re saving even more.

5. Swap nights out for nights in

Saving money doesn’t mean you have to be boring. Instead of always going out for dinner and drinks with friends, invite everyone around to your house. A barbecue, game night or wine tasting will cost a fraction of what you would spend out on the town.

6. Be a borrower

When getting excited about your cruise, it can be easy to start buying all the expensive goodies you think you’ll need. Binoculars, snorkel and mask set, special winter coats – it can add up quickly. Instead, ask around your friends, family or workmates and see if anyone has some you can borrow. Odds are you won’t need these things again, so it makes sense to share.
