Queen Mary 2 rescues sinking yacht

Crew on the cruise ship Queen Mary 2 performed a rescue after a storm caused chaos for participants of a transatlantic race.

The Plymouth to Rhode Island race, which started on May 29, was disrupted by turbulent weather with 15 metre waves and wind speeds up to 60 knots.

Mervyn Wheatley, a yachtsman in his 70s, was rescued by the luxury cruise liner.

The RMS Queen Mary 2 wrote on Twitter, “Thanks to Dave Ashley who is aboard Queen Mary 2 now watching rescue efforts to the yacht that is in distress.”

Prior to the incident, Ostar and Twostar 2017 wrote online, “Mervyn Wheatley is now first in the Jester Class. He is currently doing 6.6 knots and just over 2,000 miles to the finish.”
