Why Prince William and Kate have different names when they travel

They’re known officially as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – or William and Kate – but as it turns out the royal couple are known by different names when they travel to Scotland or Ireland.

As we know, when the couple wed in 2011 they were bestowed their Duke and Duchess title by the Queen. It is the name that's been passed down to their children – Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

However, what many people don’t know is that they were also given a few other royal titles.

When the couple visit Scotland, they are known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn.

While in Northern Ireland, they are Baron and Lady Carrickfergus – a title which hadn’t been used since 1883 but was revived for Prince William and Kate.

And they're not the only ones who take on a different title when they travel.

Prince Charles and Camilla – or the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall – are called Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland.
