The essential item the Queen doesn’t need

The Queen has visited 116 countries around the world during her 64-year reign (and counting), but did you know she’s done so without ever owning a passport?

Her Majesty does not need to carry a passport, or any other travel documents for that matter, as she does not need to prove her identity.

As the website of the Royal Family explains, the first page of each British passport reads: “Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”

So you see, Her Majesty doesn’t need to have a British passport of her own because they’re all issued in her name.

The rest of the royal family aren’t so lucky though and require passports to travel abroad like the rest of us.

The same principle applies for UK drivers licences, which are also issued in Queen Elizabeth’s name. She is the only person in the entire United Kingdom who can legally drive without a license or number plates on her state car. And as we’ve seen in the past, she seems to have a handle on things!
