Son takes his newly-widowed mum on European adventure

When his father Karl passed away last year, US man Barton Brooks saw an opportunity to give back to his mother Carla, who had spent the last two decades caring for her sick husband. “My mother’s entire life has been about other people… but especially since my dad’s stroke,” Barton told People. “She was stuck as a caregiver who had lost her meaning, because her meaning was my dad.”

So, what did he do to show his appreciation for Carla? Took her on an all-expenses-paid European holiday, of course!

While exploring the treasures of France, Italy and other incredible countries, Barton is treating his mum to 20 special outings (a trip to Euro Disneyland, cultural demonstrations, French cooking classes and the like) to mark each year she spent looking after her husband.

The mother and son, along with Barton’s partner Gregg Goodbrod, are documenting their travels online, and the pictures are absolutely heart-warming. If you have a recommendation of somewhere they should visit, click here to submit a suggestion.

Tell us in the comments below, have you ever been treated to an overseas holiday as a gift before? Where did you go?
