Robert Irwin reaches major career milestone

Robert Irwin has won the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award for an incredible dramatic drone shot of a bushfire.

The photograph shows a horrific fire raging near the border of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in Cape York, Queensland.

Over 55,000 votes were cast in the global competition, and it aims to recognise a photo chosen by the public each year as part of the Natural History Museum’s annual awards.

Irwin is a passionate wildlife photographer and often shares his work on his Instagram account, @RobertIrwinPhotography.

The 17-year-old said he was “incredibly excited” to win the award.

“I feel it is particularly special for this image to be awarded, not only as a profound personal honour but also as a reminder of our effect on the natural world and our responsibility to care for it,” he said.

Over 49,000 images from around the global were submitted for the annual competition.

Five images including the snap taken by Robert, were picked as the top favourites.

The photographs are set to be displayed in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition when the Natural History Museum in London reopens.
