Prince Harry has been given Prince Philip’s old job

Prince Harry has been given his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh’s role as Captain General to the Royal Marines.

Prince Philip, 96, joined his grandson for a ceremony at Buckingham Palace after the Queen appointed Harry to the role.

Philip held the title of Captain General for 64 years after replacing King George VI on June 2, 1953.

He had given up his military service, which included serving as a naval officer in World War II, when Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952.

Harry, who studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, has served in the Armed Forces for a decade and been on two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

“The Queen has been pleased to give her formal approval to the appointment of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales as Captain General Royal Marines,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

It was a rare public appearance by Philip, who retired from public life in August after serving more than 65 years supporting the Queen in her role as head of state.

Since his retirement, the prince has spent most of his time at Wood Farm, a cottage on the grounds of the Queen’s Sandringham estate.
