Predicting the next royal baby's name – here are the favourites!
With royal baby number three officially on its way, the question all royal fans want to know is just what will Prince William and Kate name the newest addition. There are many potential royal baby names but the Duke and Duchess have an established naming style, so we can narrow the list down.
- All six of the first and middles names they have used for their children have a royal precedence.
- Both George and Charlotte were popular English monikers at their time of birth. In 2012, George was the twelfth most popular name and Charlotte was number 23 in 2014. The Cambridges are likely to go for a traditional but popular name for the third baby.
- William and Kate have chosen names that honour family members. George shares a middle name (Louis) with his father, whereas Charlotte shares her mother’s and maternal grandmother’s middle name (Elizabeth). All three are "C. Elizabeth”.
- Although the Duke and Duchess don’t have an issue with repeating names of extended family – William has maternal first cousins named George, Alexander, and Louis – but don’t use the names of the current immediate royal family (i.e. the Queen’s children and grandchildren). So Anne, Andrew, Edward, Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise and James won’t likely be first-name choices.
Based on the information, the Eleanor Nickerson of Nameberry.com has picked the top names that are most fitting in the royals’ style.
- Alice – The bookies’ favourite if the baby is a girl. It’s a royal name with family history – Queen Victoria’s daughter was named Alice and it’s the name of Prince Philip’s mother. It’s also a popular moniker in England at the moment, currently ranking number 24.
- Arthur – If it’s a boy, the bookies’ pick is Arthur. Discounting names already in use by the royal family, Arthur is the highest ranking royal name left, sitting at number 35 in popularity in England.
