Man turns himself in after striking elderly man in hit-and-run

A manhunt to find the driver of a truck that struck an elderly man in an alleged hit-and-run in Sydney’s west has concluded, after he was arrested and his truck seized.

The 89-year-old man was struck by a truck on Wednesday morning in South Granville.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the victim before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.

The man remains at the hospital in critical condition, a statement from NSW Police said.

Paramedics said he suffered internal injuries, as well as “a significant number of large fractures”.

A witness speaking to 7NEWS said the truck driver got out of his vehicle after allegedly hitting the elderly man, before driving away.

“He’s got back in the truck and I thought he was going to move it further up to come back to see what happened but he kept going,” the woman, who wished to be anonymous, said.

Police confirmed the witness’ account, with Detective Acting Inspector Robert Burlin adding that, “the driver of the vehicle has got out on a number of occasions to have a look”.

After police established a crime scene and began investigating the incident, images were released of the man believed to be the driver.

At about 7.30 pm that evening, the man attended Granville Police Station and was arrested.

His unattended truck was later located in Chester Hill, and has been seized for forensic examination.

The 54-year-old has been charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.

After being granted conditional bail, he is due to appear in court in January 2022.
