Touching photo of elderly couple is proof that love can last a lifetime

A photo of the married couple holding hands while both receiving care in a Virginia hospital recently surfaced, proving how strong the bounds of love and devotion can really be.

John and Bernice Mullins have not had an easy marriage. The world war two veteran and stay at home mum raised their granddaughter as a child after the death of her parents. Then, around 30 years ago, the inspiring couple realised they simply couldn’t live together anymore and they separated. However, they never divorced or stopped caring for each other and remained next door neighbours in Cumberland County.

Now, John, 92, has been diagnosed with two types of cancer and Bernice, 90, recently underwent surgery. Somehow, the couple still finds a way to make it work. John requested to be in the same hospital room as his wife but the nurses said it wasn't possible to move him, so they brought Bernice's bed into his room instead.

John's aide Chyenne Marion told US news station WTVR "They were together about an hour or two holding hands and sleeping… I was crying and all other nurses were crying. It was like a real-life The Notebook."

Bernice Mullins is expected to be released from the hospital any day now while John Mullins should be released before the end of the year. The couple will mark their 71st wedding anniversary next month.
