Revealed: how often you should wash everyday items

Most of us use these things everyday but how often do they need to be cleaned? A microbiologist and underwear specialist were consulted to find out what’s best. The dirty truth about your hygiene habits might surprise you…

Phones – everyday

It’s estimated that we touch our phones up to 150 times a day. Scientists examined 51 sample phones and discovered 7,000 types of bacteria on it. “When you use your phone it heats up, providing the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply,” says Laura Bowater, a microbiologist at the University of East Anglia. She recommends giving it a quick wipe down every day or as often as you remember.

Sheets – once a week

We don’t see it but we shed millions of skin cells every day and many of those are found right where we sleep: in our beds. Add to that we sweat during our sleep, we’re a breeding ground for attracting dust mites that can trigger itching, inflammation and asthma. Bowater recommends washing sheets once a week to destroy bacteria.

Bras – every two wears

Kelly Dunmore, lingerie expert for Rigby & Peller says cleaning after “every two wears, possibly three, is ideal,” adding, “the crease in your bust and the area under your arms are hot, sweaty environments.” Avoid machine washing and hand wash instead.

Handbags – every week

Just think about where the bottoms of your bags have been?

“I wouldn’t put mine on the bed, or on top of kitchen surfaces. You take it everywhere with you; you put it on bathroom floors, and pick it up after handling food or travelling,” says Bowater, recommending that you should wipe it down with antibacterial wipes every week.
