Grandpa finds 1 year old lotto ticket and wins $1 million

A grandfather from Newcastle has become a millionaire after cleaning his car and finding a winning lotto ticket he had bought one year ago.

The man purchased the ticket in January last year but just recently found it in the bottom of his shopping bag.

After finding the ticket, he checked the ticket online and found that he had won a division one prize of $1,020,496.

"I line the bottom of my reusable Aldi shopping bags with old beer cartons to give them some strength," the grandfather said.

"The ticket was hidden in underneath it and I didn't know it was there. I'm glad I didn't just get the old bags and take them to the dump," he said.

The winner plans to use his winnings to help his children with house payments and pay for his grandchildren’s education.

Owner of Nextra Marketown Newsagency, Cheryl Tuckerman, was happy the search for the customer who had bought the ticket from her newsagency in Newcastle was over.

NSW Lotteries has encouraged players to check their old tickets.
