Video beautifully shows power of music therapy for dementia patients

Blacktown hospital staff have been using music to help patients suffering from dementia.

In this video, dementia patient John “Sean” O’Malley is dancing along to some of his favourite Elvis hits.

Western Sydney Health wrote on the caption of the video, “His dementia often made him angry, distressed and agitated… you won’t believe what happened next.”

His daughter Trish Scerri explained that the music therapy is making his family less worried about how he is doing in the hospital due to its positive impact.

Trish said, “We know that this music has brought a lot of happiness while he has been here and such a huge change in his behaviour and he has been dancing around the ward since it has been happening.”

Clinical nurse consultant for dementia Katie Conciatore said, “It creates a happy and positive environment when we have this program running.”
