Celebrity friendships that have stood the test of time

In an environment as fake and drama-driven as Hollywood, it’s rare to see friendships and relationships last longer than a few years or even months. However, some dedicated best pals have defied expectation and remained friends for decades. Here are six of our favourites. To see how they’ve changed over the years, scroll through the gallery above.

1. Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

The handsome pair met in 1990 while filming Air America and quickly hit it off. Throughout the past 27 years, Mel and Robert have helped each other through relationship breakups and drug and alcohol addiction.

2. Jennifer Anniston and Courteney Cox

Jen and Courteney might have just played Friends at first, but their bond was just as real off-screen. Through more than two decades and a number of relationship breakdowns, the duo have stuck by one another. “All I can say is she’s been there for me through thick and thin,” Jen said of Courteney.

3. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon

These big screen stars have been as thick as thieves since childhood, bonding over their love of film from the age of just 10. It wasn’t until the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, however, that they first worked together. The two are still close today, and admit even their children are friends.

4. Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman

These days they frequent the same red carpets, but back in the 80s, they walked the same halls between classes at North Sydney Girls’ High School. Since then, they’ve been huge supporters of each other’s acting work, with Watts revealing they share “naughty wicked senses of humour”.

5. Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito

A real-life “odd couple”, Douglas and DeVito were roommates way back in 1960s’ New York City. DeVito admitted Douglas did most of the work, including the laundry, with Douglas revealing, “Danny was sloppy”. 50 years on, they’re still close friends.

6. George Clooney and Brad Pitt

Heartthrobs Clooney and Pitt became great friends while on the set of Ocean’s Eleven, and now, whenever they work together, they enjoy pranking one another. While filming the sequel, Clooney had a crowd of fans stand outside Pitt’s window chanting, “George! George! George!” all night. Pitt got him back by telling the Italian film crew Clooney only wanted to be referred to as “Danny Ocean”.
