Gordon Ramsay: the one food you should never order at a restaurant

He’s just as famous for his penchant for swearing as he is for his culinary talent, but in an interview with Good Housekeeping, Gordon Ramsay has set aside the expletives and served up some restaurant etiquette instead – and it’s rather helpful.

  1. What to do if you don’t like your meal – “You are going out for a special night, so if it's an unsatisfactory experience, take the opportunity to let the staff know so that they can rectify it then and in the future.” Likewise, Ramsay says you shouldn’t be shy about offering compliments on good food or service, either.
  2. Should you trust the server’s recommendation? – It’s a risk, but one you should take. “It really depends on the restaurants, but servers tend to taste most of the dishes on the menu and can give you insight to what the chef has added or what locals love.”
  3. What you should never order – The soup of the day mightn’t be so “of the day,” after all. “Ask what yesterday's soup du jour was before today's special. It may be the case that it's the soup du month.”
  4. What’s the worst day of the year to dine out? – Valentine’s Day. “Busy kitchens with tons of diners means you don't get the true feeling of the restaurant.” Ramsay recommends a romantic home-cooked meal instead.
  5. Is it wrong to order a well-done steak? – Ramsay himself prefers rare, but it’s all up to you. “The problem with over-cooking meats is it diminishes the flavour and incredible texture, so listen to the chef’s recommendation or always stick to cooking medium at most.”
