Why you should let your dog listen to music

Bondi Vet’s much loved veterinarian, Dr Chris Brown, reveals why it could be a good idea to break out those old reggae albums.

It might be time to get “Spot” his own Spotify account. It turns out our pets don’t just like music, they also get their groove on for particular styles. Here’s how you can brighten their day with beats…

In research just released, shelter dogs were played music for 6 hours during the day. But it wasn’t a random playlist. Some days they heard classical, while on others it was reggae, soft rock, pop and even Motown. Then on select days they heard no music at all. And in news that will delight all wannabe dog DJ’s, every form of music was found to lower heart rates and stress hormone levels. Yes, the furry family doesn’t just feel the rhythm, it actually relaxes them. 

But what was the favourite musical style? Well, it turns out that reggae and soft rock gave Fido the most ‘feels’. So, in essence, Bob Marley really might be your pet’s spirit animal. Either that or the world has finally found a use for all those old UB40 albums...
