Why do pets wink at us?

Bondi Vet’s much loved veterinarian, Dr Chris Brown reveals the reason behind those cheeky winks our pets so often give us.

Ever wondered why your pet is winking at you? Well, rather than dialling up the sass, there’s a much softer and sensitive reason behind it….

Here’s the thing. Whereas a direct stare sends a threatening message, a blink does the exact opposite. In fact, it’s one of your dog’s favourite friendly greetings. Watch closely and you’ll notice that, second to the sniff of the ‘south end’, blinking between dogs is often the best way to make it clear you come in peace.

In fact, a long blink with a look away can even be the best way to diffuse a difficult or uncomfortable situation. This even explains why so many dogs blink in photos. That camera lens looks enough like an open, staring eye for them to try and ease the tension.

So should you blink and wink back? Well, it’d be rude not to! That way, you’re basically hugging them with your eyes and letting them know that everything will be ok.
