The surprising details around baby Archie’s christening – and why his godparents might be revealed after all

Despite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex previously announcing they would not release the details of who Archie’s godparents will be, it seems the public will still get to find out.

According to the Parochial Registers and Records Measure (1978), the royal couple will not legally be able to conceal the name of their newborn son’s godparents.

The English rule means that all baptisms, including details like the name of godparents for example, are a matter of public record and can be viewed by anyone for a $50 fee.

This information comes to light after Buckingham Palace shared that both Prince Harry and his wife, Duchess Meghan, would keep baby Archie’s christening as a private ceremony.

"Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor will be christened in a small private ceremony by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday 6th July,” the statement read.

Channel 7’s Sunrise royal expert Robert Johnson says Prince Harry will choose his cousin Zara and her husband Mike Tindall to be the godparents.

However, Johnson believes the Duchess of Sussex may opt for her best friend prior to meeting Prince Harry, Jessica Mulroney, and she may be asked to take on the duty as Archie’s godmother.

Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall will likely be attending tomorrow’s private ceremony for Archie, along with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

However, it has been confirmed Queen Elizabeth will be unable to attend the christening of her great grandson due to prior commitments.
