12 amazing things you never knew about your cat

Last year, we took a look at some incredible facts about our canine companions, but today, it’s time to celebrate kitties! Here are XX things you probably never knew about your feline friend.

1. Politi-cat – A cat named Stubbs was mayor of Talkeetna in Alaska for 20 years before he passed away last year. Rest in peace!

2. Nine lives – Looks like cats really do always land on their feet! There are several cases of cats who have survived falls of over 320m onto concrete.

3. A healing purr – A cat’s purr can signal more than just contentment. It can also be a form of self-healing when they’re feeling nervous.

4. Mr Moneybags – The world’s richest cat is a former stray named Tommaso, who is worth a staggering $13 million after his wealthy owner, who took him in from the streets, passed away in 2011.

5. Don’t trust cartoons – Contrary to what our favourite childhood cartoons made us believe, milk is a no-go for cats, who are actually lactose intolerant! Raw fish is also off the menu.

6. Same same but different – The structure of a cat’s brain is 90 per cent similar to human’s – that’s more than their canine counterparts!

7. Book smarts – Dogs have a higher social IQ than cats, but cats beat them in another area – they’re better at solving difficult cognitive problems. That is, when they feel like it.

8. Abe loved cats – Abraham Lincoln kept four felines in the White House. When asked about her husband’s hobbies, Mary Todd Lincoln reportedly replied, “cats”.

9. Gravity and cat doors – He was better known for formulating the laws of motion and universal gravitation, but Sir Isaac Newton is also credited with inventing the cat door.

10. Tight spaces – Ever wonder how your kitty can squeeze through narrow openings? They have free-floating clavicle bones that attach their shoulders to their front legs.

11. An uncommon breed – Only 11.5 per cent of people consider themselves as “cat people”, and those who prefer cats to dogs are 11 per cent more likely to be introverts.

12. Young at heart – The oldest cat on record was named Crème Puff and lived in Austin, Texis from 1967 to 2005. She passed away just three days after her 38th birthday.
