4 important times when less isn’t more

It’s often said that “less is more” – a saying intended to encourage people to show restraint in some aspect of their life – whether it be acquiring unnecessary nick knacks, accessorising outfits, or even choosing words. But, as with just about every commonly used catchphrase, there are many exceptions to the rule, and while it can be fun to throw these in the face of the smug person who wields words of wisdom like weapons, it’s politer to read about them quietly.

Thomas De Monchaux of the New York Times extols the virtues of austerity in the name of good, minimalist design, and makes some interesting arguments along the way. However, today we’re looking at things you can do more of to make you a better person, not a better architect.

1. Create more

Creativity is one of the most wonderful forms of expression. Whether you draw, write, sing, paint, scrapbook, sew, build, compose, knit, or papier-mache, finding the time to express your creativity is good for your mind and soul.

2. Give more

Some people dislike the imperative to “give more” because they worry about leaving nothing for themselves – assuming that the only thing they have to give is monetary. But giving doesn’t have to be a physical act, it can be a kind word towards a friend or stranger, or perhaps some donated time at a local charity.

3. Indulge more

Now, this one can be interpreted in different ways, depending upon your personality and particular vices, but it can be good for you to indulge in time spent on something you love. Whether that’s watching an entire season of television in a weekend, luxuriating in a long bubble bath, or spending a few solitary hours fishing. Make time to be happier.

4. Support more

Being supportive to people around us is something that often takes very little effort, but that can greatly help the people we support. If you know someone going through a difficult time, then reaching out to offer a shoulder, an ear, or a home-cooked meal can make a big difference to them.

When was the last time you showed that more is better than less?
