Why men fall asleep faster than women

The US department of health and services have recently stated that insomnia is more common in women than men. Experts attribute this to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes during the menstruation cycle, menopause, physical discomfort during pregnancy and a range of other conditions women are more prone to. Such conditions include anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia and restless head syndrome.

Even motherhood alone can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Sleep psychologist and behavioural sleep medicine specialist Michelle Drerup told CNN that many of her patients have ‘mommy ears’. By this, she means mothers don’t sleep as deeply because of an underlying concern about being quick to respond to their child should there be a disturbance in the night.
