Toddler killed during massive hail storm

A 20-month-old baby girl has been killed during a massive hail storm on the north-east coast of Spain.

The town mayor of La Bisbal d'Empordà Carme Vall told Spanish National Television the baby was with her parents when she was hit by the ball of ice Tuesday.

She was taken to hospital for her injuries, but died on Wednesday morning.

More than 20 people were treated for injuries after the storm, with the mayor confirming many cars and buildings were damaged by the hail.

It the largest to rain down on the region since 2002.

She said that the some of the hailstones measured up to 11cm in diameter, as video footage on Spanish media showed the hailstones bouncing like golf balls on cars in the street.

"The hail only fell for 10 minutes, but it was 10 minutes of terror," Carme Vall told local radio, according to AFP news agency.

Catalonia's president Pere Aragones described the accident as a "tragedy".

More storms were expected in the region next week.

Heavy storms have been predicted for eastern Spain following severe heatwaves during the summer both on land and in the Mediterranean Sea.
