Prince Philip rushed to hospital

The Duke of Edinburgh has been rushed to hospital for a treatment of an infection from a pre-existing condition.

Prince Philip, 96, was admitted to London’s King Edward VII Hospital on Tuesday night. He will spend a second night in hospital.

The Duke was scheduled to accompany Queen Elizabeth to Westminster to deliver a speech to open the new Parliament on Wednesday morning London time. Prince Charles accompanied his mother instead.

He was also due to accompany the Queen to Royal Ascot for the second day of the five-day event.

Buckingham Palace released a statement saying Prince Philip’s admission to hospital was a precautionary measure and that he was in good spirits

“The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition,” a palace spokesman said.

“Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot.”

The Duke’s illness comes a month after he announced he would retire from official public duties from autumn.
