Palace confirms ailing Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital

Prince Philip has been admitted to a London hospital for a planned hip surgery which will take place on Wednesday.

The royal family confirmed the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital on Tuesday for the operation.

“Further updates will be issued when appropriate,” a spokeswoman said.

The 96-year-old Duke retired from royal duties in August 2017 after carrying out more than 22,200 public engagements since the Queen ascended to the throne in 1952.

He has since been seen with the family at a Christmas Day church service, but recently missed several public events including the Easter church service in Windsor on Monday.

In November last year, Prince Philip and the Queen marked 70 years together by releasing a new portrait.
