Friend shares rare update on Michael Schumacher

A close friend of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has revealed his positive hopes for the family and the motorsport icon’s recovery.

Jean Todt has told German newspaper Bild, that he believes Michael will "slowly and surely improve" despite his debilitating head injury after a ski accident back in 2013.

"I've spent a lot of time with [Schumacher's wife] Corinna since Michael had his serious skiing accident on December 29, 2013," Todt said.

"She is a great woman and runs the family.

“She hadn't expected that. It happened suddenly and she had no choice.

“But she does it very well. I trust her, she trusts me.

"Thanks to the work of his doctors and the cooperation of Corinna, who wanted him to survive, he survived - but with consequences."

Schumacher, 52, has a long journey ahead of him.

Since his ski accident in the French Alps, over seven years ago, the Formula One star has been undergoing treatment and care.

Swiss neurologist Erich Riederer said the former Ferrari driver was in a "vegetative state" after his accident.

The family has chosen not to update the public on his condition.

By keeping his recovery a secret in an effort to maintain their privacy, it has led to more intrigue over his current state and chances at healing from his injuries.
