Brooklyn Nine-Nine star dies at age 61

Two-time Emmy award-winning actor Andre Braugher has passed away at the age of 61.

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor died on Monday, with his publicist confirming the devastating news in a statement to Variety

The statement confirmed that Braugher passed away after a battle with a short illness.

Braugher was best known for his role as the loveable, hilarious and stern Captain Holt in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which he starred in for the show's eight seasons.

During his time on the show, he won two Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and received four Emmy Award nominations.

Shortly after news broke of Braugher’s death, his Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars began sharing emotional tributes to the actor.

Terry Crews, who played Braugher’s character’s second-in-command Sergeant Terry Jeffords, wrote on Instagram of his disbelief that his co-star was gone “so soon.”

“I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts,” Crews wrote alongside an image of Braugher.

“You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like... Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man.”

Meanwhile, comedian Marc Evan Jackson - who played his on-screen husband, Kevin Cozner - shared a sweet portrait of the actor, writing simply: “O Captain. My Captain.”

Throughout his extensive career, Braugher also starred in Men of a Certain Age, The Good Fight, and most recently, drama film She Said alongside Carey Mulligan.

He won an Emmy for his portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, as well as his role as Nick Atwater in the miniseries Thief.

He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, along with sons Michael, Isiah and John.
