Body language expert reveals why Meghan Markle can't stop touching her hair

The public scrutiny on royal-to-be Meghan Markle has intensified ever since her engagement to Prince Harry was announced to the public in November last year.

As she starts making more public appearances alongside her prince, many have noticed how Markle touches her hair a lot or runs her hands through her locks.

Body language expert Blanca Cobb believes there could be a good reason why.

“Some people touch their hair, play with their fingernails, or rub their arms as a way to psychologically and physiologically calm themselves when they’re feeling anxious, uncomfortable, or stressed,” Cobb told GoodHousekeeping.

“Some people might touch, twirl, or stroke their hair when in awkward social situations, such as when they’re not sure what to do or what to say.”

So is Markle’s hair touching a sign of anxiety or simply a habit?

According to Cobb, context is key.

She explains: “For example, if someone frequently touches their hair in a variety of non-stressful situations, such as talking on the phone, reading a book, or watching TV, then it’s more likely a habit they’re not even aware of. If, however, they tend to touch their hair when having a heated discussion or they’re uncomfortable with someone around them, then it’s more likely a body language tell.”

During the official engagement announcement, Markle was seen touching her hair a number of times, which Cobb believes was a soothing gesture.

“Her head is also tilted down slightly. Sometimes when you feel too much attention, you might tuck your chin down as a way to shield yourself,” she said.
