The dirty manicures to watch out for
New research has uncovered the type of nail polish that harbours the most bacteria after hands are sanitised.
The study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, found that gel nails, or Shellac, retain the most bacteria after cleaning.
For the study, researchers compared the nails of healthcare workers with standard polish, gel polish and those whose nails were left unpainted.
They then measured the bacterial contamination over 14 days.
The study, which evaluated more than 700 bacterial cultures, found that all types of nails became contaminated over time regardless of the product applied, but gels were the worst.
Acrylic nails aren’t recommended for healthcare workers as sanitising hands is more difficult, but researchers explained that little is still known about gel products.
Gel nails require curing or hardening under an ultraviolet light and are popular because it is believed they are gentler on natural nails.
Shellac nail polish has risen in popularity over recent years due to celebrity endorsement.
