6 healthy foods that cost less than $3
Despite the claims of health food stores wanting to sell you the latest unpronounceable superfood, healthy eating doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, it can all be done quite cheaply. Here are six foods that are good for you and your wallet.
1. Eggs
A single egg contains protein, 11 vitamins and minerals including iodine, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Whether you like them scrambled, poached or fried, a six pack of free range eggs won’t cost you much at all, coming in at around $3.
2. Oats
Before fancy grains like quinoa or freekeh came into the picture, the humble oat reigned supreme. Packed full of fibre, protein, magnesium and manganese – and with a pack of rolled oats costing you less than $2 – it’s time to revisit this classic.
3. Bananas
Packed with natural carbohydrates, vitamin B6 and potassium, bananas provide a natural energy boost.
4. Pumpkin
Loaded with important antioxidant beta carotene that protects against heart disease and certain types of cancers, pumpkin is a cheap and filling ingredient.
5. Peanut butter
A jar of unsalted peanut butter costs you under $3. One serving has 3 mg of antioxidant vitamin E, potassium, B6 and it’s also packed full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.
6. Brown rice
Substitute white rice for brown and it will still be cheap as chips. Brown rice is a great source of manganese, fibre, selenium and it’s great option for people who have cholesterol problems.
