5 fashion mistakes that make you look older

Choosing the right clothes for your body shape is hard enough, but even when you do find something that fits like a dream, there’s something else to worry about – is this making me look older than I am?

Channel Nine Style Manager Alex Wilson has told 9Honey her top five fashion no-nos for older women and what you can do instead.

1. Black isn’t always a safe option

It’s slimming, classic and easy to dress up or down, but Wilson warns black isn’t always the best choice for ageing women. “As women get older their skin tends to get paler so black can create a harsh contrast that emphasises fine lines and shadow under the eyes,” she explains. Instead, opt for earthy, neutral tones like grey or camel.

2. Don’t let your clothes wear you

When we’re feeling self-conscious, it’s natural to want to cover up more than normal. But by hiding under your clothes, you’re actually making yourself look worse than you think. “Wearing shapeless clothes can actually make you look heavier,” she reveals. “The key is structure, for instance, a well-cut jacket that cinches in at the waist shows off the most flattering parts of your body.”

3. Choose the right hemline

Ankle-length garments can make you look “frumpy and wider”, according to Wilson. Instead, go for dresses that stop just under the knee or at the middle of your calf. “It is important to keep the look elongated, so choose the right footwear with this style such as a pointed pump,” she advises. “Avoid a strappy heel that cuts you off at the ankle.”

4. Be smart with your fabrics

Jersey and other stretchy materials may be comfortable, but Wilson says they tend to cling to “problem areas” and aren’t exactly flattering on the shape. Instead, she recommends choosing ponte, knit or merino wool. “These fabrics have stretch but still hold structure.”

5. Shapewear is your friend

We usually save it for special events, but Wilson claims shapewear can “cut years off your age,” simply by hiding any unwanted lumps and bumps. “Shapewear styles have come so far with a lot more feminine and attractive styles available,” she explains. But make sure you choose the right size – smaller will not make you look slimmer, just very uncomfortable!
