The Crown star Matt Smith breaks his silence
The Crown’s Matt Smith has broken his silence over the gender pay gap, after it was revealed his co-star Claire Foy, who portrays the Queen, was earning considerably less.
Smith, who plays Prince Philip in the series, addressed concerns in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, at the premiere of his new biopic Mapplethrope.
"I support her completely, and I'm pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because that what's needed to happen," Smith said.
"Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and a more even playing field for everyone involved — but not just in our industry, in all industries."
Foy, 33, has won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards or her portrayal of the Queen, while her counterpart Smith, 35, has not received similar honours.
Producers have said the pay gap could be due to Smith being better known after his six-year stint as the star of Doctor Who, and said it would be rectified moving forwards.
"Going forward, no-one gets paid more than the Queen," producer Suzanne Mackie told Variety.
