Energy boosting alternatives to coffee

Coffee seems to be a love-it or hate-it drink. Those that aren’t fans of coffee might experience the jitters, anxiety or reflux – which is a good enough reason to say no to the morning brew. Even coffee lovers might find that they can feel ill after drinking a strong coffee. So if you are interested in other on-trend ways to get your buzz on in the morning, read on.

These delicious coffee alternatives are gaining popularity and offer the same comfort and ritual that you know and love from coffee.

1. Matcha latte

This frothy green drink is popular in health food circles but not readily available just yet. The good news is that it is actually quite simple to make at home.

In a high powered blender or Vitamix, bring together half a cup of almond milk, half a cup of coconut milk, half a teaspoon organic matcha tea powder, one tablespoon coconut oil, vanilla stevia, pure vanilla powder, and cinnamon. It’s packed with antioxidants, keeps your energy up and your focus strong. The healthy fats from the coconut oil will also keep hunger pains at bay.

2. Turmeric latte

The health benefits of turmeric are well documented, and this hot drink can help improve digestion while also fighting off sugar cravings. Simply boil two cups of filtered water, then add a handful of freshly sliced turmeric root, some ginger root, and three cinnamon sticks. Let it simmer until the water turns dark orange in colour, then strain it and add frothed coconut milk. This will make four serves, so keep the others to reheat on another day. Can’t get your hands on fresh turmeric? Try adding powdered turmeric and cinnamon to warm milk and stir well.

3. Bulletproof cacao tea

You may have heard of Bulletproof Coffee, but now there’s the tea version too. As it is made from cacao beans, the tea is very rich and has a real chocolate hit – plus the caffeine from the cacao. Bring together two teaspoons of the tea with half a cup of filtered hot water, half a cup of coconut milk and two tablespoons of Kerrygold butter.
