Release date and details of The Crown season 2 confirmed

Last year, Netflix’s groundbreaking drama charting the first few years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, The Crown, quickly became one of the online streaming service’s most popular programs, and if you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend that you do. Now, we’ve finally got some details about season two, and it already sounds good.

Returning to the palace will be Claire Foy (the Queen), Matt Smith (Prince Philip), Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret), Victoria Hamilton (the Queen Mother) and Jeremy Northam (Antony Eden). New additions to the cast include Matthew Goode (who played Henry Talbot in Downton Abbey), who will play Antony Armstrong-Jones, the Earl of Snowden, and Michael C. Hall (famous for his lead role in crime series Dexter) as President John F. Kennedy.

It has already been announced that the roles of the royal family members will be refreshed every two seasons (to account for ageing), so this will be the last hurrah for the current crop of Windsors.

At a Royal Television Society Event, the show’s creator Peter Morgan revealed season two, which will span the years between 1957 and around 1964, will have a greater focus on Prince Philip. “I find him extraordinarily interesting – his childhood, again, you couldn't make it up,” he said. “The soul of season two is about his complexity.”

Another key plot point will be the relationship and marriage between Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden.

Season two is set to be released on Netflix in November, and if the first season is anything to go by, it will be just as dramatic and compulsively watchable. Tell us in the comments below, will you be tuning in?
