10 weird things you never knew about your favourite TV show sets
We’ve watched our favourite TV characters live in these onscreen homes season after season, but a closer look reveals that there is more than what meets the eye.
1. The Golden Girls kitchen table
Despite four women living in the home, there were only three chairs at the dinner table. This was because the fourth chair made the set look too cluttered and small so if all four women needed to be in the shot, one would sit on a tall stool by the kitchen island.
2. The Bewitched house
The home’s façade in Bewitched also features in shows like I Dream of Jeannie and Dennis the Menace.
3. The Addams Family living room
If the home was filmed in colour it might not have had the same spooky effect. The living rooms walls were actually pink!
4. The changing apartment numbers in Friends
In the first few episodes of Friends, Chandler and Joey’s apartment number was 4 and Monica’s was 5. This was later changed to number 19 and 20 to communicate that the characters lived on a higher floor.
5. The Full House stairs
The architecture in the Tanner family house has caused some confusion among fans. When the family are downstairs there are two staircases in the living room and the kitchen. However, when the characters are upstairs, only one staircase is visible.
6. The medicine cabinet in Sex and the City
Before filming, Sarah Jessica Parker spotted Carrie’s medicine cabinet at a flea market and fell in love with it. She didn’t buy it and then when she went back to purchase it, she had been told it was sold to a TV show. When she appeared on set, the medicine cabinet was there.
7. Lost’s secret instruments
The plane wreckage props from Lost’s pilot were used throughout the series and they were also used to create instruments that feature in the soundtrack of the show.
8. The pier in Dawson’s Creek
While filming, a hurricane tore down the pier in the show so the crew had to rebuild it from scratch.
9. The mansion in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The home that houses the characters and action in the series isn’t located in Bel Air but Brentwood, California.
10. The Gilmore Girls couch
Melissa McCarthy, who played Sookie the chef, previously revealed in an interview that Lorelai and Rory’s couch was “like sitting on a pile of bricks”.
