Apple iPhone celebrates its 10th anniversary

The Apple iPhone will celebrate its 10th anniversary this week, marking a decade of revolutionising the way we use our mobile phones.

It’s been a decade of change with the iPhone laying the foundations for the smartphone era of today, forever altering the way we send messages, use apps, take photos, navigate with our maps, bank, shop and much, much more.

Apple released its first iPhone on June 29, 2007, introduced by creator Steve Jobs as it “a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone”.

“We are all born with the ultimate pointing device — our fingers — and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse,” he said.

At that time, Nokia was the leader in the market with more sales than its three nearest competitors combined — Motorola, Samsung, and Sony.

These days, the iPhone dominates phone sales. It won back the title of the world’s best-selling smartphone from Samsung last year, and it’s still one of the nation’s most popular phone brands.

And even after a decade on the market, iPhone prices have not dropped, instead steadily climbing.

Top model iPhones now sell for almost 50 per cent more than the first iPhone in the US.

While technology prices often fall over time, the iPhone is an exception due to the leaps in technology introduced by each new phone.

But after a decade, the next frontier in the smartphone wars may see major change in the market.

Apple is tipped to make big changes to its next smartphone, dubbed the iPhone 8, later this year.

We can only wait and see.
