8 tricks on your iPhone that will save you time

Even though we use our phones every day, there are still features within it that are yet to be discovered. Follow these tricks to make your life a little bit easier.

Sometimes it can be hard having to type out a long email address or phrase repeatedly. Your iPhone has a text replacement feature that allows you to type a few characters in replacement of the actual thing.

How to do it: Open Settings and then press General. Tap on Keyboard and then press Text Replacement. Tap the + on the top-right corner. In the Phrase field, type the word or phrase you want to create the shortcut for. In the Shortcut field, type the characters you want to replace the phrase. Then tap Save in the top-right corner.

2. Hey Siri

On your phone you can enable Hey Siri, which lets you use Siri without pressing any buttons on your phone. It is helpful for when you lose your phone in the house as you can shout “Hey Siri” and if you are close to your phone you will hear a tone.

How to do it: Open Settings and then scroll down and tap Siri. Press the button to Allow Hey Siri.

3. Tell Siri how to correctly pronounce names

Sometimes Siri can pronounce one of your contacts names incorrectly.

How to fix it: Hold the home button or say, “Hey Siri”. Then say, “That’s now how you pronounce [name].” Say your friend’s name. Siri will offer four pronunciation options. Select the correct pronunciation.

4. Use your keyboard as a trackpad

You can move your cursor more accurately instead of tapping and holding on the screen to bring up the magnifying glass.

How to use it: While you are typing a message, firmly press and hold onto the keyboard to activate the trackpad. Drag your fingers around to move your cursor through the text. When the cursor is where you want it to be, let go.

5. Use your iPhone as a Level

The compass app that’s preinstalled on the iPhone gives the owner quite a few handy tools, one of them being a spirit level.

How to use it: Open up the Compass app and then swipe left. Lay your phone flat against the surface and then it will check the levelness.

6. Backspace on calculator

The iPhone calculator allows you to backspace.

How to do it: Swipe to the left or right at the top of the screen where the numbers are. Your swipe will delete the number that was last typed.

8. Set a sleep timer

If you like to listen to music or podcasts as you fall asleep then this feature will be useful. The timer can stop audio playback from any app at a given time.

How to use it: Open the Clock App. Select Timer at the bottom right. Set how long you want the timer to be. Tap When Timer Ends. Scroll to the bottom of the list and press Stop Playing. Tap Set at the top right of your screen. Press the Start button. Then proceed to drift off to sleep and your phone will turn off your music.
