Dolly Parton’s heartbreaking confessions
Dolly Parton has revealed shocking truths about her complicated past in a new book Dolly on Dolly, Interviews and Encounters with Dolly.
The 71-year-old bared all, revealing she once considered suicide after a lover broke her heart, gained 23kgs binge eating, cheated on her husband and that her breasts are implant free (but lifted).
Back in the early 1980s, the “Queen of Country Music” said a broken heart from an unnamed lover outside of her open marriage to Carl Dean nearly pushed her over the edge.
“I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom one afternoon when I noticed in the nightstand drawer my gun that I keep for burglars. I looked at it a long time... Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs.
“The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God,” Dolly confesses in an interview published in the new book.
“I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure. Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities even for someone solid like me if the pain gets bad enough.”
Dolly also spoke about her trademark appearance, calling it a “gimmick”
“I like the big hairdo, the gaudy clothes. I’ve never thought of myself as being a sex symbol and I don’t want to have to be a beautiful woman, like Raquel Welch.
“I want people to know it’s me when they see me coming and when they see me leavin'...
“So I figured I might as well look even more extreme.”
The diminutive star also said her breasts are real but admits to having them lifted, as well as to various other nips and tucks.
