Vietnam bans Hollywood blockbuster

Hollywood’s big movie release Uncharted has been banned from being shown in Vietnam because it shows China’s nine-dash line map.

The film, which stars Antonio Banderas, Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland, has caused controversy in Vietnam over historical claims.

The nine-dash line map shows what islands within the South China Sea that China claims to control including Paracel, Spratly, Shongsha and Pratas.

Vietnam and the Philippines express consistent and vocal disagreement about the boundary which they say is illegal and endangers the sovereignty of multiple nations with economic zones within the South China Sea.

Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei also oppose the nine-dash-line claim but aren’t as vocal about it.

“The film was banned from distribution after we watched it and found it contained an illegal image of the infamous nine-dash line,” Vi Kien Thanh, the head of the Department of Cinema told state-run Vietnam News Agency.
