The moment you missed after Roger Federer's Australian Open win

Roger Federer has faced a barrage of bizarre questions from movie star Will Ferrell, in a post-match interview following his Australian Open win on Tuesday.

After recording a comfortable 6-3 6-4 6-3 victory over challenger Aljaz Bedene, the 19-time grand slam champion was forced to share the limelight with the Anchorman star, who was brought onto the court by John McEnroe.

Federer, who was just as stunned as the crowd when Ferrell arrived, did his best to field questions from the movie star who intentionally got McEnroe’s name wrong.

“In the immortal words of Ron Burgundy, it’s great to be here with two tennis legends — Roger Federer and John McIntosh,” Ferrell said, intentionally getting McEnroe’s name wrong.

The interview, which you can see above, had many strange points with Ferrell describing Federer as a “silky gazelle”, before touching on the topic of wombat meat.

Will Ferrell: There’s a rumour in the men’s locker room that you love coming to play in Melbourne and your secret to fitness is you only eat wombat meat. Is that true?

Roger Federer: That is untrue. I have not (eaten it). Should I?

Federer reflected on the interview in his post-match press conference.

“I didn’t know that was going to happen,” Federer said. “That was fun.

“I saw him when I started the match, then I totally forgot he sat there. At the end, I realised he is still actually there. That’s when he walked out onto centre court. It was nice to have a Hollywood presence here in Melbourne in combination with the tennis.

“People seemed to enjoy themselves. It was great to see Johnny Mac, too. Love the guy. It was a fun interview, I thought. I don’t know about you guys, but I enjoyed it.”

What are your thoughts? Do you think it’s just a bit of harmless fun? Or would you have preferred Federer talk about the match? Let us know in the comments.
