Original Luke Skywalker lightsaber sells at auction for whopping amount

An original lightsaber used by Mark Hamill has sold at auction for US$450,000 (AU$590,000) reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The Luke Skywalker prop used in Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back was sold to the Ripley company.

Known for Ripley's Believe It or Not!, the lightsaber was likely to feature at one of the 32 'Odditoriums' around the world.

The prop originally belonged to Gary Kurtz who worked as a producer on the first two Star Wars films.

The auction house, Profiles in History, had also sold an original R2-D2 droid last week for US$2.76m  (AU$3.6m)
