Dame Twiggy! 60s icon accepts new title at Buckingham Palace

53 years after Twiggy was named “the face of 1966” by UK newspaper The Daily Express, she has just been made a Dame of the British Empire.

The 69-year-old was awarded the prestigious title by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.

Twiggy was given the award on Thursday. She was dressed in a cream Stella McCartney silk ensemble and couldn’t contain her excitement about receiving the award. She was validated, as she was told it was “about time you got this, we’re all thrilled for you”.

Twiggy was accompanied by her husband, Leigh Lawson, daughter Carly Witney and Lawson’s son Jason.

In a formal statement about being made Dame, Twiggy was thrilled.

‘’I’m a very proud Brit, I feel I’m an ambassador for Britain, I always have, because I think it’s the best country in the world.”

“I travel the world all the time and I’m known throughout the world and, you know, being British is one of my things.”

Twiggy went on to have a successful acting career after her modelling days came to an end.
