8 of the best Christmas movies of all-time

It’s time to get into the festive spirit! Get the decorations out, bake some Christmas treats and put on one of these classic holiday films.

Here’s our list of the best Christmas movies of all-time to give you some viewing inspiration:

Love Actually (2003)

With a cast that includes Jude Law, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley and Colin Firth, it’s hard to go past Love Actually as one of the best Christmas films of all time. The complex plot line follows nine intertwined stories of seemingly disconnected British characters as they each prepare for Christmas.

Home Alone (1990)

This is a great one to watch with the grandkids! When a charismatic eight year old called Kevin McCallister finds himself mistakenly left at home on his own during the Christmas holidays, he gets up to all kinds of mischief. 

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

One of the most popular films in American cinema, this gorgeous 40s classic is a great movie to get into the festive spirit.

The Santa Claus (1994)

Comedic legend Tim Allen plays divorced dad Scott who is forced to step into the real role of Santa after he scares Santa when he hears noises on his roof. Loved by young and old, this is a great family film.

Elf (2003)

Elf follows the story of Buddy, played by actor Will Ferrell, who is accidentally transported to the North Pole as a child and is raised by Santa’s elves. As a human, Buddy towers over his elf friends and feels like he doesn’t fit in. He travels to New York City, where hilarity ensues as the elf tries to explain himself to the city dwellers who don’t believe in Santa. 

The Holiday (2006)

While it may not top a list as one of the greatest pieces of cinema, this Christmas flick is great guilty viewing. Featuring an all-star cast including Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, it’s one for the grown-ups.

A Christmas Story (1983)

Based on the work of author Jean Shepherd, this holiday movie follows the story of young boy Ralphie Parker and his quirky everyday adventures.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

An adaption of the classic tale by Dr Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas follows the plight of the reclusive Grinch who goes to great length to ruin Christmas day for the citizens of Whoville. This is Jim Carrey at his comedic best!
