People are loving this beautiful real-life “Giving Tree”

Just over 50 years ago, the world went crazy for Shel Silverstein’s beautiful children’s book, The Giving Tree. Now, more than half a century later, the book is still touching people’s lives – especially the residents of Oakland, California, where a real-life Giving Tree has popped up.

Photos of the tree stump, bearing a famous passage from the book, have gone viral after they first appeared on Reddit and Instagram earlier this week. It reads, “’I don't need very much now,’ said the boy, ‘just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired.’ ‘Well,’ said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, ‘well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.’ And the boy did.”

The gorgeous monument to the beloved book has made thousands around the world fall in love with it all over again. “This book makes me cry even today,” one commenter admitted. “I’m 33 now.”
