Best books of 2016 so far

Last year gave us some incredible reads like The Girl on The Train and Go Set a Watchman. So far, 2016 has been just as good a year in the world of books. Let’s take a look at some of this year’s best books that you simply won’t want to put down.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

Prepare to be inspired by the true story of neurosurgery student Paul Kalanithi, who at 36 years old was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Follow his life, struggles and enduring hope as the medical student becomes a patient himself, facing the prospect of leaving his wife and child behind. Kalanithi sadly passed away while writing this New York Times bestselling book, but his words live on as the perfect life-affirming memoir for those who need it the most.

The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

The Nest is the hilarious debut novel by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, telling the story of three grown-up siblings trying to prevent the eldest (a drunk-driving, rehab-frequenting 46-year-old Leo Plumb) from squandering the family savings – the “nest”. This sharp, witty book will make you reflect on your own family – and perhaps be thankful they’re not as dysfunctional as the Plumbs!

The Widow by Fiona Barton

If you’re a fan of Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, you’ll love Fiona Barton’s debut novel The Widow. When Jean Taylor’s husband is accused of committing a heinous crime, her blissfully ordinary life comes crashing down around her. When he dies, she finally feels free to reveal all their secrets… but will she tell the truth?

The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel

From the man who brought us Life of Pi comes the stunning new novel The High Mountains of Portugal. Following three intersecting stories of men who live decades a part, this book is described as “part quest, part ghost story, part contemporary fable”. Funny, touching and beautiful, The High Mountains of Portugal will take you on a journey through Portugal and through life itself.

Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben

Love a good thriller? This one’s for you! New York Times best seller Fool Me Once will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. While she’s at work, Maya sees a shocking image on the nanny cam in her home: her 2-year-old daughter playing with her husband. The crazy part? Her husband was killed two weeks ago. This heart-pounding mystery will make you question whether or not everything you see really is what it seems.

My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout

In this stunning novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout, we follow the fractured relationship of a mother and her daughter, who suddenly finds herself stuck in hospital. Grappling with her troubled childhood, failing marriage and struggling career, Lucy must reconcile her difficult past with her mother’s desire to patch up their damaged relationship.
