Son captures fun photo series of mother with dementia

When photographer Tony Luciani’s mother was diagnosed with dementia, he set out on a mission to preserve her memories with a fun shoot, highlighting the surrealism of ageing.

“The photos became about storytelling, almost like my mother’s diary,” Luciani told the Huffington Post. “I’m trying to encourage the idea that no matter how we are seen on the outside, we can be ourselves on the inside.”

The gorgeous photos certainly do just that, capturing the struggle of dementia sufferers and their desire to still remain the same person. “Mum’s feelings of aging and memory loss were instrumental in deciding the direction this series was going,” Luciani said. “I hope this project with my mum will encourage others to truly see and develop compassion for their elders and not ignore, abandon or shut them out.”

Hear, hear!
