New official portrait of Prince Philip revealed

2017 has been a busy year for the British Royal Family. From a royal engagement, a baby announcement and a 70th wedding anniversary, it’s certainly been an eventful 12 months for the family.

One of the most significant moments for the royals this year was Prince Philip’s official retirement after decades of service to the Commonwealth and the Queen.

To commemorate his retirement, the palace has released a stunning new painting of the Duke of Edinburgh looking poised and powerful.

In the portrait, Prince Philip can be seen wearing the sash of the Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s highest-ranking honour.

The 96-year-old was born the Prince of Denmark and Greece and has always remembered his heritage.

The portrait was taken in the Grand Corridor of Windsor Castle by Australian artist Ralph Heimans.

"I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to paint Prince Philip and hope the portrait does justice to his unique character," Ralph said.
