Why Prince William and Kate don’t call Princess Charlotte by her actual name

Why Prince William and Kate don’t call Princess Charlotte by her actual name

Affectionate nicknames are the norm within loving families. The British Royal family are no exception and no strangers to nicknames, although they might be a bit different to the ones you’re used to hearing.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children have some pretty cute nicknames for their parents, and it goes both ways!

Duchess Kate’s nickname for daughter Princess Charlotte

As is the case with royal families, they often opt for more traditional names, hence the choosing of “Charlotte”. However, Duchess Kate revealed to blogger Laura-Ann in Belfast that she has a much more informal nickname for her daughter: Lottie.

Prince George’s nickname for Prince William

Prince George reportedly doesn’t call Prince William “Dad”. Duchess Kate spoke to a member of the crowd who later told reporters the following story:

“Kate said that William was playing football with the children last night and one of them said, I think it was George, 'Are you playing football tomorrow, Pops?'"

Pops! How sweet (or cheeky, depending how you look at it!)

Prince George’s nickname for Prince Charles

Seems like Prince George has no issues calling his grandfather anything he wants, especially considering he’s next in line to the throne.

The Daily Mail reported that Prince George affectionately calls his grandfather “Grandpa Wales”.

Duchess Meghan’s nickname for Prince Harry

This one is a sweet one as well. After seeing Hamilton at London’s West End, the duo got a photograph with the cast. Wanting to make sure that Prince Harry was in the photo, Duchess Meghan turned to him and asked, “Can you see my love?”

The entire cast heard and reacted accordingly.

Prince William’s nickname for The Queen

Prince William and Prince Harry can get away with a bit more than the rest of us. After all, she is their grandmother.

However, it appears that Prince William took a bit of time to get the hang of the word “granny”. According to Daily Mail royal correspondent Richard Kay, this resulted in a hilarious incident. Prince William had fallen over and was calling out “Gary! Gary!”

"A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household. ‘I’m Gary,’ explained the Queen, as she scooped him up. ‘He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet.'"

Prince George and his nickname for The Queen

Like father, like son. Turns out Prince George has a sweet nickname for The Queen as well. In an interview with ITV, Duchess Kate revealed a sweet detail about the relationship between her son and his great grandmother.

"George is only two-and-a-half and he calls her Gan-Gan," Kate said.

They’re just as sweet to each other though.

"She [The Queen] always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay and that just shows her love for the family,"

Prince Harry’s name for Duchess Meghan

These two have led a busy life since marrying in May 2017 and and Duchess Meghan’s baby is due sometime this late April, but despite their hectic schedules, they have still found the time to call each other pet names.

Although it might not be as sweet as Duchess Meghan’s “my love”, it does the job. Prince Harry prefers “Meg” according to this video from an Invictus Games Reception. Short, sharp and sweet.

Prince Philip’s nickname for Queen Elizabeth

This famous duo have been married for an insane 71 years, so it makes sense that they would have a nickname for each other. According to royal biographer Robert Lacey, he says that Prince Philip calls the Queen “Cabbage”.

Lacey told The Sunday Times in 2006, “Yes, I've heard that is how he will sometimes refer to her.”

Prince Harry’s nickname for Duchess Kate

The trio of Prince Harry, Prince William and Duchess Kate were close for many years, so it’s not surprising that Prince Harry has a nickname for his sister-in-law.

After hearing on a podcast that Prince Harry had nicknamed Duchess Kate “Cath”, radio presenter Scott Mills thought he’d give it a go.

"I’m not sure, I’m not that familiar with it," Duchess Kate told Scott Mills, adding: "But I will answer to most things."

Prince Charles’ nickname for Duchess Meghan

Duchess Meghan is currently undergoing family turmoil, so it’s sweet to see that Prince Charles is able to be that father figure for her at this point in time.

According to an insider from The Daily Mail, Prince Charles has a huge amount of admiration for Duchess Meghan and affectionately calls her "Tungsten".

"Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy."
